Member Interview: French at Heart
For our first member interview, we’re honored to have Kay, the owner and inspiration behind French at Heart. Kay is one of the DBA’s longest supporters and we’ve been happy to have her as one of our very first members!
How long has French at Heart been in Downtown Lodi?
We’ve been in Downtown Lodi for 12 years this year! French at Heart moved to new the new location next to Secondhand Rose 7 years ago.
What inspired you to establish French at Heart in Downtown Lodi?
I had the capitol and I'm French!
My mission statement is "where the past meets the present, effortlessly". I like to mix old world charm with new items. I’m inspired by French design and the French flea markets. I was so impressed with the flow of French flea markets, mixing old fixtures with the new—everything went together. I have a deep love for antiques. I get to go to the flea market with the kids— our side hustle is estate sales and if there's something interesting that will work in the store, I buy it! The two stores (French at Heart and Secondhand Rose) compliment each other.
I feel like I offer the customer a choice and a treasure hunt to find a special gift for someone; for me it's all about the thrill of giving someone a gift. Presentation is everything!
The priceless part is being with my daughter and doing business alongside her. Being with my kids is what's important to me.
What do you love most about operating a boutique in Downtown Lodi?
You never now who's gonna walk in the door. I love when people meet up to shop, drink, and eat here in Downtown Lodi. I especially love when the babies grow up here, it brings me a lot of joy to see the kids coming in as they get older to buy special gifts that hold fond memories.
How does French at Heart contribute to the unique character and charm of Downtown Lodi?
I love to be a part of a treasured memory. I feel that the mix I have here is different and a product of my own creativity. Being able to share that with the people who come in to see us is so special to me.
What is one thing you wish more people knew about Downtown Lodi?
That we are here for them! Lodi is quite charming, we're in the heart of the valley. It's Ag industry, I think that it's a sweet little Mayberry with a charming little vibe. We have a lot to offer.
What special events, promotions, or initiatives does French at Heart participate in to engage with the Downtown Lodi community?
We participate in the Lodi Street Faire and maybe a sidewalk sale in the future.
What do you like to do in Downtown Lodi when you’re not working your business? We love to eat at Guantonio's or go to the movie theater. Scotto's is our favorite spot to unwind. I love to shop at Joe Hassan's or take my granddaughter to the WOW Museum!
